The procedure for laying out block, brick and composite walls using the proper hand power tools and equipment are part of the bricklaying students' training. On-the-job training helps bring the students in touch with the real work-a-day world. This trade is sponsored by the Homebuilders Institute.
Business Technologies
Students learn office procedures including filing, keyboarding, record keeping, and receptionist skills. Students will receive training in the computer software they will encounter in the workforce, including Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Database software. The opportunity exists to certify in computer literacy through the IC3 program, as well as Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The student will possess performance based skills and knowledge to compete in the business workplace. Current Work Based Learning Sites include: Weber County Correctional Facility, Bureau of Reclamation and Hill Air Force Base.
Carpentry
Trainees in carpentry use the hand tools and power equipment needed in the building profession. On-the-job training in building wall forms, partitions, roofing, and building frameworks is received through building projects on and off the Centers' campus. This trade is sponsored by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Carpentry students participate each year in the Utah Arts Festival, preparing the city of Salt Lake streets for the event.
Culinary Arts
The Program emphasizes comprehensive, practical hands on and technical training skills in the Culinary Arts field. Culinary students prepare a variety of daily menus to include: institutional, full service banquet, and fine dining menus. Students are offered the Serv Safe Certification course. Our Students are offered work base learning sites at local restaurants and ski resorts. Weber Basin Culinary Students participate and excel in local, regional and National Culinary Competitions. Current Work Based Learning Site: McKay Dee Hospital, Lions Den, Mt Ogden Nursing Home, and the Advanced Technology Center.
Facilities Maintenance & Landscaping
On-the-job training in this program is provided by using 20 different buildings on Center for hands-on learning. Students are taught entry level plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and much more with the use of all applicable tools. Several acres of landscaping is also available for hands-on training in the field of Landscape Maintenance using state of the are equipment such as a zero turning radius mower, midsize tractor with front-end loader and backhoe. Current Work Based Learning Sites: South Ogden City, Harper Seeding, and Home Depot.
Painting
Painting students learn the special techniques of preparation, mixing, and application of paints, stains, latex, oil paints, etc. Trainees receive practical experience in both interior and exterior painting. Newly installed paint booth allows students to learn the preparation and air spray techniques for automobile paint application. Painting students also learn carpet and tile installation and removal. This trade is sponsored by the Union of Painters and Allied Trades.
Welding
Training in Welding is provided in a modern shop with state of the art equipment in the areas of oxyacetylene, ARC, MIG, and TIG. The students receive training in operation, set-up, layout, metals, and various kinds of welds. Instruction is also given in Dual Shield, Flux Core, and Sub ARC welding. Graduates receive an American Welding Society Certification. Work Based Learning Sites: AmFab, F&J Structural Steel, Iron Works, C/Tech, Bish Fabrication, Blue Star Steel, Pop Arts, and Pitchers Playgrounds.
High School Diploma, administered by the Davis County School District and the Utah Board of Education, Weber Basin High School is a fully accredited school and our teachers are certified with the State of Utah. Students will receive a TABE test to assess their current grade level. All classes are self-paced. Small classes ensure complete teacher/student one-on-one assistance. Preparation classes and testing on-Center are also available to students to obtain their GED Certificate.
Several students in the High School program are selected each year to compete in the Academic Olympics. A Local, Regional and National Job Corps competition where students will travel out-of-state with instructors to different Centers in the United States.
Utah State University Campus Classes
Students may enroll and be eligible for grants to attend college. Classes are taught on-Center by Utah State University teachers, accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. Many Weber Basin graduates continue their college education upon graduation.
