Weber Basin Job Corps Center
Residential Living
Campus activities have been designed for the express purpose of promoting the development and improvement of the students' social and personal skills. Often a students' negative self-concept is a major barrier to being successful in a job and in life. The residential program, along with the vocational and educational programs, helps to improve the student's awareness of his or her potential as a worker and as a human being.
Each dormitory has about 56 young adults each. There are two male and two female dormitories. All of the dorms have a Big Screen TV, lounge, reading material and games. Students view their dorm as their home, and they work as a team keeping it clean and attractive. Students who are able to motivate and organize others, become Dorm Leaders. The residential living program has a great impact on many areas of students' lives by promoting positive relationships among different racial/ethnic groups, motivating alienated or discouraged youth, enhancing students' adaptation to unfamiliar group living situations, fostering changes in counterproductive attitudes and habits, and encouraging positive peer group and interpersonal interactions.
Student Government Association (SGA)
A student leadership council is elected by the students twice a year. They participate in developing new student projects and activities for student involvement. SGA members are the voice of the students' to the management staff. They attend weekly meetings and participate in monthly committee meetings.
Recreation
The Recreation Department offers a variety of activities. Sports include basketball, softball, volleyball, and football. The Center has both men's and women's teams which host tournaments between trades, dorms, and staff.
They host a variety of seasonal activities including- concert trips, movies, bowling, skiing, skating, shopping trips, rodeo trips, Utah Grizzlies Hockey, Utah Jazz basketball games, arcade trips and dinner outings. Dances are scheduled regularly including a yearly "prom". Every October, all four dorms compete in the Weber Bowl, an all day flag football game. Each July the center brings in a variety of carnival attractions, along with a day long softball game.
Our Recreation Hall sports a Big Screen TV, eleven pool tables, ping pong and air hockey table. Snacks are plenty at the newly remodeled Commissary selling items from hygiene products to your favorite kind of snacks and candy bars.
Our Arts-and-Crafts area is filled with projects for everyone. Ceramics, scrap booking, macrame, beading, painting, including seasonal crafts in making gifts for home.
The Center's full court gym utilizes every inch of available playing space. The gym also sports a modern weight room on the second floor.
Dining
Hall
The center's dining hall provides 3 meals each day for students.
There is also
a Culinary Arts Facility for hands-on and classroom teaching. Those who have
attended the center's Community Relations Council luncheons know that Culinary
Arts students prepare creative and delicious dishes, and create an elegant
presentation! Culinary Arts students also compete in the National VICA
competition sponsored by area restaurants.
Community Involvement
Events and activities are available throughout the year to provide the opportunity for students to further develop their leadership, employment, and social skills as they "give back" to their community. These projects include: National Youth Service Day, Make A Difference Day, Ground Hog Shadow Day, American Red Cross, Fire Crew, CAST for Kids, Utah Arts Festival and many others as they occur. The Center even participated in the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics & Paralympics.
Health Services
Clinic
The center's Health Services Clinic serves to help students maintain their
health while making wise health care decisions that will enhance job performance
and employability. The clinic provides basic health care services to students.
The clinic is staffed weekdays by two registered nurses. A Physician, mental
health doctor and dental services are also regularly available on center
throughout each week.
Our Trainee Employee Assistance Program (TEAP) specialist is available weekdays.
He is there to provide information and assistance for students with substance
use and abuse issues.
Career Development Building (CDT)
The Center's CDT houses the staff that will closely monitor, document and help evaluate your progress at Weber Basin. You will be assigned a Career Transition Specialist who will work closely with you as you prepare to enter the work force. Communication is an important part of your success and the CDT will be helping you during your training and after you have graduated the program.
Work Based Learning
Students will gain experience in actual "hands on" employment environments in various departments on-Center and employment at various off-Center work sites.
